    Everglades National Park Commission Papers

    Scope and Contents The Everglades National Park Commission Papers are comprised of items dated from June to October in 1946. The first item is a four-page document entitled, "Official Meeting of the Executive Committee of the Everglades National Park Commission at the Lunsford Lodge on Windley Island, June 15, 1946." The second item is a four-page letter, dated July 19, 1946, "To the Property Owners Within the Everglades National Park Area," that gives a good history of the establishing of the park.     Fenton McArthur Prewitt papers

    Scope and Contents The materials in this collection are related to the life and work of Fenton McArthur Prewitt. There is a fifty-page typescript entitled, "Chronological facts pertaining to the fifty years and after fifty years of the life of Fenton McArthur Prewitt, discussing his life, family genealogy, and career. There are a number of newspapers in the collection from the following cities in Florida: Tavares, Gainesville, Waldo, Starke, Jacksonville, Wauchula, Tampa, and Plant City.     This collection is comprised of documents pertaining to librarian faculty status dating from 1956-1958. The documents contained in the collection include letters between Florida State University (FSU)'s assistant librarian, Florence Bethea and the Constitution Committee's Chairman, Robert Miller, notes and suggestions for proposed amendments to the constitution, and copies of proposed constitutions. There are significant gaps in the collection. The earliest dated document is February 23, 1956 and the remainder covers the last few months in 1958.

    Scope and Contents A bound photocopy of the handwritten memoirs of Frances Elizabeth Brown Douglass, daughter of Governor Thomas Brown of Florida. On the first page appears the following note: "MEMOIRS OF FRANCES ELIZABETH BROWN DOUGLASS These memoirs of Frances Elizabeth Brown Douglass, wife of Samuel James Douglass and daughter of Thomas Brown, were written at the request of her family.     Governor Andrew's Proclamation

    Scope and Contents A printed proclamation by John A. Andrew, Governor of Massachusetts, Boston, Mass., March 11, 1862, in which he proclaimed "Thursday, the third day of April next, to be observed throughout this Commonwealth, as a day of public HUMILIATION, FASTING, AND PRAYER. The printed proclamation is in the form of a broadside and bears the seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The subject is entirely religious, and the quality of paper and appearance of the format would indicate that it was the custom to frame such annual proclamations.     Governor Thomas Brown Letter

    Scope and Contents Manuscript letter by Governor Thomas Brown, Executive Department of Florida, Tallahassee, Florida, January 31, 1853, to Captain Wm. B. Cone. Cone was a former member of Legislature from Camden County, Georgia, but at the time of Brown's letter was a Captain of a Company of Calvary in the State of Georgia. The letter was in reply to Captain Cone's letters of January 21 and 24, 1853, in which Captain Cone had offered him the service of "a Company of Calvary in the event of Indian hostilities."     Gramling Civil War Diary

    Scope and Contents The two items in this collection are a copy of a typescript made by Clifton Paisley from the original holograph diary and a biographical sketch of the author of the diary, Wilbur W. Gramling. The original of the diary, which the donor described as being in "small handwriting and some of it is illegible because the ink has badly faded," was found among the belongings of the late Owen Irvin Gramling Sr. of Tallahassee, founder of O. I. Gramling and Company and nephew of the author. The original has subsequently come into the possession of O. I. Gramling Jr. of Tallahassee.     Scope and Contents Leatherbound notebook containing the manuscript diary and cash accounts ledger of an unnamed itinerant Baptist minister, active in the American Southeast. Diary entries describe visits to locations in Florida, including Crawfordville, Flat Creek, Sopchoppy, and Tallahassee; and in Alabama, including Decatur and Gadsen. The first item in the collection is a set of original typed (with one set of copies) letters by Cabell to Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (1940-1953).
