Holograph letter written by John D. Bates, Sr. in 1863 to his son, John D. Bates, Jr. of Boston, Mass. The letter relates to the capture of the Confederate cruiser FLORIDA. Also discusses briefly France's offer of the Mexican crown to Maximilian. Along with the letter and its envelope, there are two enclosures. One is a holograph letter from Captain William Lull (1863) to John D. Bates, Sr. in regard to his ship. The other is a handwritten sheet of instructions on firing a furnace.

Abstract

The John MacKay Shaw Collection consists of the Childhood in Poetry Collection and other materials he collected that relate to the six themes that are evident throughout the Collection: bibliography, biography, children, collecting, publishing, and writing. These other materials include articles, audiovisual materials, biographical materials, catalogs, correspondence, literary materials, notes, photographs, programs, and publications documenting his personal, business, and collecting activities.

26 items, including books, serials, and manuscripts about Ikebana,the art of Japanese floral arrangement. The manuscripts include 3 flower arrangement note books kept by Katherine Wallick at various workshops from 1970-1972 and a yearbook of the Virginia Peninsula Chapter of Ikebana International from 1972-1973. The serials include 27 issues of the Ikebana International magazine.

This collection consists of a holographic manuscript of Florida land of change, published by the University of North Carolina Press in Chapel Hill in 1941. This manuscript was written in 58 blue examination books dated April 24, 1941.

Abstract

Materials documenting Laurence Campbell's early professional and teaching career in journalism before becoming Dean of Florida State University (FSU)'s School of Journalism; administrative and professional materials covering the operations of and activities sponsored by the School of Journalism during his years as FSU Dean; professional materials related to his later work as head of FSU's Department of Educational Foundations and Professor of English Education, and high school journalism periodicals and monographs germane to his career.

This collection consists of letters from LeRoy Collins to Dr. Daisy Parker. Among the subjects mentioned are Judge Taylor and Parker's campaign assistance. The fifth item in the collection is a copy of a letter to Malcolm Johnson that was enclosed in a 1968 letter to Dr. Parker.

The Loren E. Jackson manuscript "Epilogue to a War Story" documents Lieutenant Colonel Loren E. Jackson's experience as a prisoner of war when he was shot down during D-Day from his B-17 that he piloted with the 385th Bomb Group during World War II. His manuscript details his encounter with the German Gerhard Graf von Schwerin who he met in the 1960s after not seeing him since he was interrogated by him. Jackson recounts the conversation he had with General and touches on multiple subjects, such as German memory of war, behaviors of the Germans, morale, and the surrendering of Germany.

The papers consist of certificates of purchases of land, a certificate commissioning Scarborough as Captain of a volunteer infantry company, land deeds, Territorial Florida manuscripts, a picture of Mrs. M.L. Scarborough, newspapers and clippings, personal letters, reports of blankets, provisions, and clothing required by Floridians in prison at Fort Delaware, promissory notes, receipts, invoices, and a typed copy of "Express-Supplement", a letter to an unknown newspaper editor by William T. Gregory in 1860, pertaining to the proposed secession from the Union by Florida and other states.

Abstract The bulk of the Malcolm Johnson Collection documents Johnson's journalistic career from his time with the Associated Press from 1940-1954 to his editorship of the Tallahassee Democrat from 1954-1970. The collection includes correspondence, subject and personality files, clippings of Johnson's columns and editorials, photographs, speeches written by Johnson, memorabilia, and various published materials collected by Johnson over his career. Scope and Contents Two letters written by Mary Bates of Tallahassee, Florida. Transcriptions are included with each original letter. One letter is written from Dudley, Massachusetts. Both letters are addressed to a Charles Dana, Jr. of Woodstock, Vermont. In one letter, dated April 11, 1845, Bates gives a vivid description of a sea voyage from New York via Nassau to Florida. According to the letter, during the course of the voyage a leak was discovered in the ship and at the same time hay (a large portion of the cargo) caught fire, so for some days all aboard were in serious peril. Florida State College for Women in the 1920s" is a term paper written by Mary Ellen Smith in 1967 for her History 427 course. The paper is 15 pages long and includes footnotes and maps of the school from the 1920s. It contains information about the formation of FSCW, its location, and general information about student life.

Abstract

This collection contains literary manuscripts of the American writer Mary Jane Ryals. It includes manuscripts of her short sory collection A Messy Job I Never Did See a Girl Do, a handwritten outline of "Swallows Dance" and the beginning of this story, and the manuscript of the short story "Where the Shadows Tangle and Snare and Sing."

Abstract

The May Ryburn Papers contain a variety of materials related to Ryburn's personal and professional life. Ryburn lived in both Chicago and Miami and worked as a journalist and English teacher. Included are her personal and travel journals, correspondence, materials used in her teaching career, photographs, published works, and genealogy information and records. The collection contains letters to Ryburn from Eleanor Roosevelt and Florida Governor Leroy Collins.

The letter was written on genuine birch bark by Mrs. S. L. Cawthon, October 2, 1914, while on vacation at Springfield, Vermont, and was addressed to "My Dear Girls." The letter is quite legible and contains some excellent descriptions of the areas in Vermont where she was vacationing.

Abstract

The collection contains correspondence between Rabindranath Tagore and Dr. Arthur and Mayce Seymour, as well as other friends and family. Also included in the collection are biographical materials related to Tagore's life in both India and the United States. Tagore's writings are included in the collection with works of literary criticism and analysis of his writing. The collection also contains artwork by the Tagores and photographs.
