Scope and Contents

Holograph letter written by John D. Bates, Sr. in 1863 to his son, John D. Bates, Jr. of Boston, Mass. The letter relates to the capture of the Confederate cruiser FLORIDA. Also discusses briefly France's offer of the Mexican crown to Maximilian. Along with the letter and its envelope, there are two enclosures. One is a holograph letter from Captain William Lull (1863) to John D. Bates, Sr. in regard to his ship. The other is a handwritten sheet of instructions on firing a furnace.

The serials include 27 issues of the Ikebana International magazine.

LeRoy Collins Letters

The Loren E. Jackson manuscript "Epilogue to a War Story" documents Lieutenant Colonel Loren E. Jackson's experience as a prisoner of war when he was shot down during D-Day from his B-17 that he piloted with the 385th Bomb Group during World War II. His manuscript details his encounter with the German Gerhard Graf von Schwerin who he met in the 1960s after not seeing him since he was interrogated by him. Jackson recounts the conversation he had with General and touches on multiple subjects, such as German memory of war, behaviors of the Germans, morale, and the surrendering of Germany.

The papers consist of certificates of purchases of land, a certificate commissioning Scarborough as Captain of a volunteer infantry company, land deeds, Territorial Florida manuscripts, a picture of Mrs. M.L. Scarborough, newspapers and clippings, personal letters, reports of blankets, provisions, and clothing required by Floridians in prison at Fort Delaware, promissory notes, receipts, invoices, and a typed copy of "Express-Supplement", a letter to an unknown newspaper editor by William T. Gregory in 1860, pertaining to the proposed secession from the Union by Florida and other states.

Mary Bates Letters

Scope and Contents Two letters written by Mary Bates of Tallahassee, Florida. Transcriptions are included with each original letter. One letter is written from Dudley, Massachusetts. Both letters are addressed to a Charles Dana, Jr. of Woodstock, Vermont. In one letter, dated April 11, 1845, Bates gives a vivid description of a sea voyage from New York via Nassau to Florida. According to the letter, during the course of the voyage a leak was discovered in the ship and at the same time hay (a large portion of the cargo) caught fire, so for some days all aboard were in serious peril. The May Ryburn Papers contain a variety of materials related to Ryburn's personal and professional life. Ryburn lived in both Chicago and Miami and worked as a journalist and English teacher. The collection contains letters to Ryburn from Eleanor Roosevelt and Florida Governor Leroy Collins.

Mrs. S. L. Cawthon Letter

Scope and Contents

The letter was written on genuine birch bark by Mrs. S. L. Cawthon, October 2, 1914, while on vacation at Springfield, Vermont, and was addressed to "My Dear Girls." The letter is quite legible and contains some excellent descriptions of the areas in Vermont where she was vacationing.
