Abstract

The Hancock Antarctic Collection consists of correspondence, photographs, books, pamphlets, film reels, and memorabilia collected by Robert E. Hancock, Jr. during and after his stay in the Antarctic. The collection gives some insight into the problems of supply, storage, food, housing, and entertainment required for work in such a remote environment.

Roderick Gaspero and James Kirkpatrick Shaw Papers

The Civil War letters and papers of Roderick Gaspero and James Kirkpatrick Shaw, dated 1861 to 1864, consist of letters from them to their sister, Mrs. Jesse Shaw Smith, a letter from A.M. Harris, C.S.A., describing the burial of R.G. Shaw after his death in battle, 5/28/1864, a newspaper article from Atlanta entitled: "Officers' Dream of Death Fulfilled to the Letter", a photo of R.G. Shaw, and xeroxed copies of "The history and military connections of the family of Gaspero Sweet".

This collection relates to Leonard P. Schmitt who served in the Army Air Corps in North African and China-Burma-India (CBI) Theaters with the 436th Squadron, 7th Bomb Group during World War II. This collection contains a veterans questionnaire and bound manuscript titled "Life and Times of Leonard P. Schmitt Sr." which recounts his experiences during the war.

Sketch of General Anderson's life

Scope and Contents This sketch was written by General James Patton Anderson while at his home in Monticello, Florida, recuperating from a wound he had received on the evening of the 31st of August, 1864, while in command of his division at the battle of Jonesboro, Georgia, during the Civil War. The first ten pages of the sketch are written by Anderson himself and the last page contains additional information added by Etta Adair Anderson, his wife, and Margaret Bybee Anderson, their daughter. Written by the attorney that he was, the manuscript is concise, well-written, and five of the ten pages that he wrote contain valuable information about his experiences as an officer during the Civil War. Susan Branch Music Books

Thomas Brown Diary of Trip to England

Scope and Contents This item appears to be a photocopy of Thomas Brown's missing diary of his trip to England from July 1 through November 2, 1820. On the first page of the photocopy is the following note: "This Diary of Thomas Brown was given to me, Evelyn Cameron Lewis Manning, by my sister, the late Mary Douglass Lewis, who received it from her cousin, Susan Matilda Archer, grand-daughter of Thomas Brown. Thomas Burns Letters

This is a collection of personal letters written by Thomas Burns (76th Air Base Squadron) during World War II. Burns wrote from Hendricks Field, Sebring, Florida to Mary Donnelly in Massachusetts. He mostly wrote of his experiences and activities on the base. While the letters do not deal with Florida or World War II, they do offer a glimpse into courtship during that era and life on an air base.

Tom Campbell Civil War letters

Scope and Contents The Civil War letters by Tom Campbell to Miss H.V. (Hennie) Wood of Cool Well, Virginia, are original holograph letters sent between 1861 and 1862. Each letter is accompanied by a typed transcript of the letter as well as a transparent envelope in which the letters had been stored. W.F. Barr Civil War letter

Photostat of a letter written August 21, 1861, by W.F. Barr at C.H., Culpepper, Virginia to S. Bleckley Esq. in Anderson, South Carolina. He wrote from the Confederate Hospital that he and "several others of our Regiment" were confined with measles. He gave as his location: "We are now encamped six miles north of where we were when Mr. Hammond was here at a place called Germantown..." Others mentioned in the letter were: Tom Bagwell, Jacob Maudlin, Mrs. Hubbard, B.A. McAlster, Jas. Sloan, and A.O.N. Call.
