Scope and Contents

This collection relates to Allen Jere Tillery who served with the United States Marine Corps in the 22nd Marine Regiment, 6th Marine Division, in the Pacific Theater at the battles for Kwajalein, Eniwetok, Guam, and Tinian. This collection includes a published memoir of Tillery's time in service: Well and Smartly Done: a remembrance of war 1943-1945.

The collection relates to Arthur Edwin Brenton who served aboard the USS  Pennsylvania battleship during World War II in the Pacific Campaign as a member of the U.S. Marine Guard.  The collection includes a diary, typed transcript of the diary, personal papers, newspaper clippings, as well as ship's newsletters.

Elmer Hubbard served as Radioman Second Class in the US Navy's 1st Naval Beach Battalion in the Mediterranean and European Theaters, as well as the Pacific Theater aboard the U.S.S. Buckingham attack ship during World War II. Hubbard participated in the amphibious landings at Anzio, Salerno, and Southern France. The collection consists of original wartime transcribed, typed, and mimeographed letters from original handwritten letters Hubbard wrote to his parents.

Scope and Contents This World War II collection relates to First Lieutenant Carl Johnson and his wife Marion Bennett Johnson and includes various letters, photographs, telegrams, cards, documents, and memorabilia. Carl's letters to Marion comprise the bulk of the collection and detail his college experiences as well as his training and overseas military experience as a United States Marine Corp officer during and after the war. During his career as a Marine, he was stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, then went to San Francisco to start his voyage in the Pacific. Scope and Contents

Maxine Newlander served as a U.S. Navy nurse during World War II. Serving in the United States as well as in Guam, Newlander wrote almost daily to her family back home describing her experiences in the Navy and the nature of her work. In letters she sent home to her family during the war, she describes her social life on the island of Guam, her life as a Navy Nurse, and her longing for the war to be over. The letters span from 1944 to 1945. The photographs illustrate Maxine Newlander's life in the Navy.

Helen D. Nowels-Mark served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps stationed in the North African and Pacific Theaters during the World War II. This collection contains letters sent to Helen D. Nowels-Marks from soldiers she had met at her various stations. They reflect the trials of long-distance love, the frustrations of war, and the relief at the war's end. Included in this collection are photographs and newspaper articles about some of her nurse friends, a picture diary, and her wedding in 1952.

The collection of Robert Hoffmann contains an oral history transcript provided by the Reichelt Oral History Program. Hoffmann served with the United State Marine Corps during World War II on the island of Guam.

Scope and Contents This collection contains personal papers including letters, notes, sketches, newspaper articles, and a radio interview of Mildred Shearer about her work with the United Service Organization (USO) sketching servicemen. Almost 600 photostatic copies and a few original portraits are included as well. The letters are mainly thank you notes in which servicemen and family members of servicemen commend her for her sketches. However, there are a few personal letters from friends and in one case, an entire collection of correspondence with one man in the Marines named Lieutenant Ralph Hunter Bennett. This collection relates to U.S. Navy Signalman 1st Class Phillip King Zimmerman who served aboard the U.S.S. Boston as a part of the first crew and the U.S.S. Baltimore heavy cruisers during World War II in the Pacific Theater. This collection includes two logbooks that Phillip Zimmerman maintained during his tour aboard the Boston , information relating to Zimmerman’s oral history, photographs from service, two of his hats, and ephemera.
